PRELUDE

We rest our hearts in God’s presence as we prepare for worship

BE THOU MY VISION

WELCOME

We celebrate God’s presence with us

CALL TO WORSHIP

God calls us to worship him in spirit and in truth

PSALM 103:1-5, 20-22

Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

All: Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word,
obeying the voice of his word! Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will! Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

We ask for the Holy Spirit to work powerfully among us

SONGS OF PRAISE

We sing praises to God for who he is and for what he has done

PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near; join me in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been granted in what he ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with his love he befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly fore’er we adore him.

Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly fore’er we adore him,
Gladly fore’er we adore him, gladly fore’er we adore him.

CONFESSION OF SIN

We acknowledge our need of forgiveness and renewal through the cleansing blood of Jesus

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

From the Book of Common Prayer

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

God comforts us with his promise of forgiveness in Christ

PSALM 103:8-12

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

SONG OF PREPARATION

BE THOU MY VISION

We ready our hearts to receive the preaching of God’s word
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
Thou my best thought by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always:
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

SCRIPTURE READING

God speaks to us through the reading of his word

MARK 9:14-29 (CHURCH BIBLE P. 844)

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God!

SERMON

God speaks to us through the preaching of his word

“I AM NOT THE CHRIST”

SONG OF RESPONSE

We respond to God’s word through song

YET NOT I, BUT THROUGH CHRIST IN ME

What gift of grace is Jesus, my Redeemer?
There is no more for heaven now to give.
He is my joy, my righteousness and freedom,
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace.
To this I hold: My hope is only Jesus,
For my life is wholly bound to his.
Oh, how strange and divine, I can sing, “All is mine,”
Yet not I, but through Christ in me.

With ev’ry breath, I long to follow Jesus,
For he has said that he will bring me home.
And day by day, I know he will renew me,
Until I stand with joy before the throne.
To this I hold: my hope is only Jesus,
All the glory evermore to him.
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat,
“Yet not I, but through Christ in me.”

When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat,
“Yet not I, but through Christ in me.”

SONG OF SENDING

We commit ourselves to the Lord through song

CHRIST OUR HOPE IN LIFE AND DEATH

What is our hope in life and death? Christ alone, Christ alone.
What is our only confidence? That our souls to him belong.
Who holds our days within his hand? What comes, apart from his command?
And what will keep us to the end? The love of Christ, in which we stand.

Chorus: O sing, “Hallelujah!” Our hope springs eternal.
O sing, “Hallelujah!” Now and ever we confess:
Christ our hope in life and death.

What truth can calm the troubled soul? God is good, God is good.
Where is his grace and goodness known? In our great Redeemer’s blood.
Who holds our faith when fears arise? Who stands above the stormy trial?
Who sends the waves that bring us nigh unto the shore, the rock of Christ? Chorus

Unto the grave, what will we sing? “Christ, he lives! Christ, he lives!”
And what reward will heaven bring? Everlasting life with him.
Then we will rise to meet the Lord, then sin and death will be destroyed,
And we will feast in endless joy, when Christ is ours forevermore. Chorus 2x

Now and ever we confess: Christ our hope in life and death.
