PRELUDE
JESUS IS BETTER

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP
PSALM 62:5-8, 11-12

Leader: For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

All: He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Leader: Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.

All: Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

SONGS OF PRAISE
PSALM 62
My soul finds rest in God alone, my rock and my salvation;
A fortress strong against my foes, and I will not be shaken.
Though lips may bless and hearts may curse, and lies like arrows pierce me,
I’ll fix my heart on righteousness; I’ll look to him who hears me.

Chorus: O praise him, hallelujah, my Delight and my Reward.
Everlasting, never failing, my Redeemer, my God.

Find rest my soul in God alone, amid the world’s temptations;
When evil seeks to take a hold, I’ll cling to my salvation.
Though riches come and riches go, don’t set your heart upon them;
The fields of hope in which I sow are harvested in heaven. Chorus

I’ll set my gaze on God alone and trust in him completely,
With ev’ry day pour out my soul, and he will prove his mercy.
Though life is but a fleeting breath, a sigh too brief to measure,
My King has crushed the curse of death, and I am his forever. Chorus 2x

JESUS PAID IT ALL
I hear the Savior say, “Your strength indeed is small,
Child of weakness, watch and pray, find in me your all in all.”
Refrain: Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow.
Lord, now indeed I find your pow’r, and yours alone,
Can change the leper’s spots and melt the heart of stone. Refrain
And when, before the throne, I stand in him complete,
“Jesus died my soul to save,” my lips shall still repeat. Refrain
Sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow.

CONFESSION OF SIN
Gracious and merciful Father, we confess that our strength indeed is small. Our faith is weak and our prayers are few. We are quick to take offense and slow to forgive. We are quick to anger and slow to love. By the blood of Jesus, forgive all our sins and wash them white as snow. By your Holy Spirit, teach us your way that we may walk in your truth, and give us undivided hearts that we may fear your name. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
ISAIAH 1:18
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

GIVING OF THE PEACE

Leader: Because our sins have been forgiven in Christ, we now have peace with
God and with one another. May the peace of Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

OFFERTORY
WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS
Chancel Choir, Sanctuary only
Congregation, Fairfax only

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
What wondrous love is this, O my soul,
What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing,
To God and to the Lamb I will sing.
To God and to the Lamb who is the great “I AM”
While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing,
While millions join the theme, I will sing.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
And when from death I’m free I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be.
And through eternity, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on.
And through eternity, I’ll sing on.

SONG OF PREPARATION
JESUS IS BETTER
There is no other so sure and steady; my hope is held in your hand.
When castles crumble and breath is fleeting, upon this rock I will stand,
Upon this rock I will stand.

Chorus 1: Glory, glory, we have no other King but Jesus, Lord of all.
We raise the anthem, our loudest praises ring. We crown him Lord of all.

Your kindly rule has shattered and broken the curse of sin’s tyranny.
My life is hidden ‘neath Heaven’s shadow; your crimson flood covers me,
Your crimson flood covers me. Chorus 1

Bridge: In all my sorrows, Jesus is better; make my heart believe.
In ev’ry vict’ry, Jesus is better; make my heart believe.
Than any comfort, Jesus is better; make my heart believe.
More than all riches, Jesus is better; make my heart believe.
Our souls declaring Jesus is better; make my heart believe.
And our song eternal: Jesus is better; make my heart believe!

Chorus 2: Glory, glory, we have no other King but Jesus, Lord of all.
Glory, glory, we have no other King but Jesus, Lord of all.
We raise the anthem, our loudest praises ring. We crown him Lord of all.
We crown him Lord of all.

3. A New Commandment

THE LORD’S SUPPER
During the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, true believers who repent of their sins and desire to live as followers of Christ, who revealed himself to be fully God and man in one person, are invited to partake. Children who have not been received by the Session into communing membership after a public confession of faith should refrain even though they may have personally received the Savior, because of the responsibility of the recipient to discern the Lord’s body.

PRAYER OF FAITH FOR THOSE PARTAKING OF THE SACRAMENT
Gracious Lord, I do not presume to come to this your Table trusting in my own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. In my own righteousness I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your Table. But, by your grace, grant that I may draw near to you by faith; eat and drink in remembrance that you died for me. And grant that I may feed on you in my inner being by faith with great thanksgiving. Lord, please open the eyes of my heart that I may know the hope of your calling, the riches of the glory of my inheritance and the surpassing greatness of your power toward me in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Those who do not have a personal saving relationship with Jesus Christ are asked to refrain from partaking and are invited to use this time to meditate on one of the following prayers:

PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR TRUTH
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

PRAYER OF BELIEF
Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR CHILDREN OBSERVING COMMUNION
Lord Jesus, I do not understand everything about this communion service. But I know that it is good. Jesus, when I feel hungry for the bread, please help me to hunger for you instead. When I wish I could taste the sweetness of the juice, please help me instead to think of the sweetness of your love. Lord Jesus, thank you that your broken body and your blood paid for my sin. I love you Lord. Amen.

SERVING OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP
1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

YOU ARE MY KING
I’m forgiven because you were forsaken. I’m accepted, you were condemned.
I’m alive and well, your spirit is within me because you died and rose again. (repeat)

Chorus: Amazing love, how can it be that you my King would die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true, and it’s my joy to honor you.
In all I do, I honor you.

Bridge: You are my King. You are my King.
Jesus, you are my King. Jesus, you are my King. Chorus 2x

In all I do, I honor you.

AMAZING GRACE!
Amazing grace!—how sweet the sound— that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come;
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’ve first begun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’ve first begun.

GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN
Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt,
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, there where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.

Refrain: Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide, what can avail to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide; whiter than snow you may be today. Refrain

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, freely bestowed on all who believe;
All who are longing to see his face, will you this moment his grace receive? Refrain

WE WILL FEAST IN THE HOUSE OF ZION

Chorus: We will feast in the house of Zion.
We will sing with our hearts restored.
He has done great things, we will say together.
We will feast and weep no more.

We will not be burned by the fire; he is the Lord, our God.
We are not consumed by the flood; upheld, protected, gathered up. Chorus

In the dark of night, before the dawn, my soul, be not afraid.
For the promised morning, oh, how long? Oh, God of Jacob, be my strength. Chorus

Ev’ry vow we’ve broken and betrayed, you are the faithful one.
And from the garden to the grave, bind us together, bring shalom. Chorus 2x
